A Butterfly's Revolution is a powerful memoir in which the narrator paints a searing portrait of life for Indian indentured labourers in colonial South Africa, while providing a devastatingly honest account of the inhumanity of Hindu caste hierarchy. Above all, however, it is a startling celebration of the gritty strength of the human spirit. As children, Leo, the son of a British plantation owner, and Ram, the son of an Indian indentured labourer, become close intimate friends. As young adults, the two become attracted to humanitarian work. They travel to a Hindu village called Sugarbush-'a place, ' Mohandas Gandhi tells them, 'in desperate need of human development at its most basic level.' Upon their arrival, they discover that although the labourers have earned their freedom from their British and Dutch owners, a new class of master has taken their place-the land-owning men belonging to the Hindu forward castes-and so little has changed for the masses. They embark on a fi ve-year struggle to bring progress to Sugarbush and to instill the concepts of human dignity and equality. Will these two young men succeed in realizing their noble intentions? This book provides students and general readers with a history of France during the Revolution and Empire. It includes a narrative of events from the fall of the Bastille to the defeat of Napoleon, and a compelling analysis of why the revolution occurred. The book explains how the French Revolution encountered opposition not only from the privileged but also from the common people. It examines and analyzes various forms of resistance that arose when it became apparent that the hopes of 1789 could not be realized. The Terror of 1793 - 4 aimed to annihilate this resistance and remake human nature, but its violence and financial policies crippled successor governments and liberal institutions. Amidst a new round of war and domestic subversion, Napoleon eventually restored order but at the expense of many of the ideals of 1789.

FROM THE WRITER'S PREFACE.

I DO not pretend, in this little volume, to any new discoveries touching the financial history of the Revolutionary War, but only to having brought together, in one place, those facts which are of prime interest and importance. They are written down with almost statistical brevity, but he who thoughtfully reads them will see how painfully our forefathers struggled and suffered to bring us "out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."

Ours is the only great nation which, in the Nineteenth Century, has paid a public debt contracted for war purposes, and it is not the least of the proud achievements of the American people. I have brought my little book to an abrupt close, because I wished to say here what might perhaps have been more appropriately said 'in a closing paragraph. It is this: That the most glorious celebration we could have made of our Centennial Anniversary, would have been the simple announcement that, for a second time, in the first century of our national existence, we had paid off a public debt. To do this would have required great exertions and great sacrifices, but such exertions and sacrifices were not beyond the powers of the American people.

I will be allowed to add that the surest and safest way to a resumption of specie payments is through the extinction of the public debt. Its payment ought to be the paramount object of every administration, and is a policy commended alike by National Duty and National Honour.
